Asymmetric Wolf-Rayet winds: implications for GRB afterglows
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent observations of Wolf-Rayet (WR) binaries WR151 and WR155 infer that their stellar winds are asymmetric. We show that such asymmetries can alter the stellarwind bubble structure, bringing the wind-termination shock closer to the WR star. If the wind asymmetry is caused by rotation, the wind density and distance to the wind-termination shock are both decreased along the rotation axis by a factor of a few for the observed equator-to-pole wind density ratio of WR151. If this asymmetry lasts until core-collapse the time taken to reach the wind-termination shock by supernova ejecta or a gamma-ray burst jet is reduced. This leads to a distorted structure of the supernova ejecta and makes it more likely a constant density environment is inferred from gamma-ray burst afterglow observations.

The circumstellar environment of rotating Wolf-Rayet Stars and the implications for GRB afterglows.
If Wolf-Rayet stars are the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), they must rotate rapidly to produce the GRB. This rotation may affect their stellar-wind bubbles and possibly explain why so many GRB afterglows occur in a constant density medium.
متن کاملWind Interaction Models for Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows: the Case for Two Types of Progenitors
Beginning with the γ-ray bursts GRB 970228 and GRB 970508, a standard model for the interpretation of GRB afterglows emerged involving synchrotron emission from a constant energy blast wave expanding into a constant density, “interstellar” medium. However, a massive star origin for GRBs implies a stellar wind environment, probably a Wolf-Rayet star, and we have previously suggested wind interac...

A systematic search of Wolf-Rayet wind signatures, as represented by blue-shifted, high-velocity (|Deltav|=1000-5000 kms(-1)) C IV lambdalambda 1548, 1550 absorption doublet has yielded an estimate of 20% for the incidence of these C IV absorbers near the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This is consistent with what is observed near classical damped Lyalpha absorbers that have a compar...
متن کاملWinds from massive stars: implications for the afterglows of γ-ray bursts
Recent observations suggest that long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are produced by highly relativistic jets emitted in core-collapse explosions. The pre-explosive ambient medium provides a natural test for the most likely progenitors of GRBs. Those stars that shed their envelopes most readily have short jet crossing times and are more likely to produce a GRB. We construct a...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Burst Dust Echoes Revisited: Expectations at Early Times
Gamma-ray burst (GRB) dust echoes were first proposed as an alternative explanation for the supernova-like (SN-like) components to the afterglows of GRB 980326 and GRB 970228. However, the spectroscopic identification of Type Ic SN 2003dh associated with GRB 030329, as well as the identification of SN-like components to the afterglows of other GRBs, appears to have confirmed the GRB/SN paradigm...
